The popular BMW 1 series comes in many flavours with the saloon, hatchback, five-door and convertible models. It’s a premium small family car that not only holds its price but also runs like a dream. The brilliant diesel engines ensure low running costs - the 116i returns 63mpg and, with CO2 emissions of just 119g/km, you’ll only pay £30 a year for your road tax. Safety-wise, features are strong across the whole range. The low-end 116d ES model comes with anti-lock brakes, driver-passenger-side airbags, traction control and side impact bars. While it’s not the most spacious car in its class, what it lacks in rear and boot space it makes up for with outstanding performance. It’s a great choice if you love to drive – the refined grip and confident body control make it a pleasure to manoeuvre even on the most demanding roads. The 1 Series is a good choice for couples or the smaller family coming in both 3 and 5 door versions. A stylish alternative to the VW Golf or the Vauxhall Astra, you might pay a little more but you will get a reliable car that boasts best-in-class fuel economy and green credentials.
