BMW 1 Series

The popular BMW 1 series comes in many flavours with the saloon, hatchback, five-door and convertible models. It’s a premium small family car that not only holds its price but also runs like a dream. The brilliant diesel engines ensure low running costs - the 116i returns 63mpg and, with CO2 emissions of just 119g/km, you’ll only pay £30 a year for your road tax. Safety-wise, features are strong across the whole range. The low-end 116d ES model comes with anti-lock brakes, driver-passenger-side airbags, traction control and side impact bars. You’ll also get air-conditioning and alloys with the ES models. Upgrade to the 120d SE Dynamic and you’ll benefit from rear parking sensors. Choose a Sport model and you’ll get a multi-function steering wheel. The SE spec has parking sensors and climate control and, if you’re feeling flush, the M Sport models come with a sturdier suspension and super-stylish body-kit. While it’s not the most spacious car in its class, what it lacks in rear and boot space it makes up for with outstanding performance. It’s a great choice if you love to drive – the refined grip and confident body control make it a pleasure to manoeuvre even on the most demanding roads. The 1 Series is a good choice for couples or the smaller family coming in both 3 and 5 door versions. A stylish alternative to the VW Golf or the Vauxhall Astra, you might pay a little more but you will get a reliable car that boasts best-in-class fuel economy and green credentials. After all, it’s a BMW.
