If it’s bullet-proof build quality you're after in a family car, you can't go wrong with a used Honda Accord. New prices are high, but you're a used buyer - so smile. There's lots to grin about here, too - like a broad choice of engines, among which the 148bhp 2.2i-DTEC diesel is a gem. The others are a 154bhp 2.0-litre petrol and a 198bhp 2.4-litre petrol. They're all super-smooth with a six-speed manual gearbox. The used Honda Accord is perfect for motorway driving, with comfortable rather than sharp suspension. Reliability? Honda ownership is almost worry-free and the car won its sector in the 2010 JD Power survey. Trim quality is good and it's a winner kit-wise, too, although the ES doesn't come with front foglights, automatic lights and wipers or Bluetooth. For those, you'll need the EX, which is dripping with goodies. The GT has a sports bodykit, and the Nav features, predictably, DVD sat-nav. If you want leather trim and heated seats, look for the Type S trim.
