Volvo is a family firm at heart and it makes great estates. The used Volvo V50 is no exception: it's a rewarding drive with excellent handling and bags of grip. The 1.6 and 1.8 petrol engines need working hard, but they're fine for the school run. The 2.0-litre has a bit more clout, achieving 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds, yet still returning 37mph. If you're after serious performance, go for the T5 and enjoy a 0-62mph dash of around 6.7 seconds and top speed of 150mph. The 177bhp 2.0-litre is the pick of the diesels, with good pace and 55mpg.
The used Volvo V50 is a small estate, but it's big on safety. It scored five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests, and all trims come with stability control and a full complement of airbags. Other standard equipment includes four electric windows, climate control, remote locking, alloys and CD stereo with MP3 input, while SE models get cruise control and posh seats. The SE Lux adds heated leather seats and the R a sports trim.
