When Toyota built their final Corolla in 2002, it came with a Euro look that was meant to rival the Golf. While your used Toyota Corolla won't excite in the same way as VW's hatch, build quality should be fine. Engines include the economical 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrols and the competent 2.0 D-4D, which returns 58mpg. For a small thrill, buy the T-Sport, which brings up 60mph in 8.1 seconds and tops out at 140mph, or the T-Sport Compressor, which flies to 60mph in just 6.7 seconds and on to 143mph.
The used Toyota Corolla offers lots of room for four adults, with rear leg room and comfortable seats that adjust well. The basic T2 comes with CD player, electric front windows and remote central locking. The T3 provides air-con and colour-keyed mouldings, while the T-Spirit supplies climate control, electric rear windows and a dark metallic fascia. The T-Sport is armed with all kinds of goodies, including vehicle stability, sports seats and a fancy gearknob. The Corolla achieved a four-star NCAP rating.
