About Subaru
Subaru is part of the Fujitsu conglomerate not itself known for its manufacture of motor vehicles. Fujitsu, the parent company being partially owned now by Toyota with a 15.5% stake, the Subaru division produced its first motor car in 1954. During the years from the first motor car, Subaru has designed and manufactured many successful cars; perhaps the one that put Subaru on the road to becoming a name to be reckoned with was the Legacy in 1989. The Legacy was available to the buying public as either an estate or saloon and was available in front wheel drive, or four wheel drive versions.
Motor sport during the 1980’s and 90’s brought Subaru major success, firstly with the Legacy and then the Impreza, with wins in the Safari rally and rally world championships. Subaru withdrew from motor sport in December 2008 having competed successfully since 1980.
Subaru manufacture a range of models of motor car that is clearly aimed at the family man who needs space and comfort without sacrificing performance. The Impreza is a sporty all wheel drive car that owes its heritage from it rally bred heritage but it is still practical for dropping the kids at school. The Subaru Impreza has been the performance car of a generation.
Subaru’s SUV and off road vehicles are impressive, starting with the Forester which is a car that will not break the bank, it is a reliable workhorse the Subaru Forester SUV is a great car that is equally at home on the commute to work, a spacious family car, or making light of the snow covered country lanes.
Forget the luxury estate versions of BMW, Mercedes and Audi, look at the Subaru Legacy which has been on sale since 1989, finding homes with owners who love its comfort, reliability and looks. Available with the fantastic “Boxer” engine it is now available with this in diesel; in fact Subaru is the only manufacturer to offer such an engine in diesel form, lowering the engines weight and giving the Legacy diesel the renowned Legacy handling.
A derivative of the Legacy is the tough Outback which is a real load bearing off roader that does not forget its heritage. Although it has the ability to move a mountain of stuff in its cavernous boot, it still has all the fun and driving thrills, with the practicality of a genuine crossover. The Outback is available with the with a diesel boxer engine, Subaru has devoted the last 40 years to developing this unusual engine configuration, which it claims is light, strong, has a low centre of gravity for better handling and is very smooth.
