About Skoda
In common with most European car manufacturers, Soda began operations as a maker of bicycles, as a partnership between a mechanic and a bookseller, Laurin and Klement in 1895, the Skoda connection, a manufacturer of armaments was not to come until much later, in 1925 in fact. Cycle production was to be followed by motor cycles, eventually turning to car production in 1905. In the years up to the outbreak of the Second World War, Skoda made a series of cars and trucks mainly for the Czech market. After 1945 Skoda became a nationalised company under the communist “planned economy” returning into private hands after the fall of the communist regime in 1989.
In spite of all the jokes that were common in relation to Skoda cars in the late 80’s and early 90’s, they had considerable success on the track and sold well in the UK, offering good value for money. Now part of the Volkswagen group since 2000 Skoda produce a range of cars that still give value for money, are reliable and have, of course, the backing technical input and components from the VW Group.
The Fabia is a brilliant, grown-up supermini that’s unfairly overlooked; mechanically it’s very similar to the VW Polo, and a truly reliable car, cheap to buy and to run. The Fabia is also offered in estate car form with petrol or diesel engine options.
The Octavia is based on the Volkswagen Golf MkV but it is roomier than the Golf, drives very well and has a very generous boot space, it is very solid and it is extremely reliable and is well appointed, supplied as a hatchback or estate. Skoda has combined a DSG automatic gearbox and a four-wheel drive system with its 140bhp 2-litre TDI CR diesel engine, which returns a remarkable fuel economy of between 45mpg and 48mpg.
Skoda’s Roomster offers big family space for small-car money it is a stylish vehicle is no less practical, comfortable and safe for everyday use. The Roomster is a spacious mini-MPV that gives secure handling and a compliant ride for a reasonable price.
The Skoda Superb is really the flagship of the company with very good reason, this car is claimed to have more space than a Ford Mondeo and is cheaper than a C class Merc. Modern Skoda cars are built to the highest standards, the Superb is testimony to this and the inside is magnificently engineered, you would be forgiven if you thought you were sitting inside a BMW. This car, along with the other models has buried the joke ridden company of previous years, so if you are still making fun of Skoda, the joke's on you.
