The latest version of the Renault Clio, launched in 2005, is widely accepted as being the best supermini on the road. Refined, roomy and well built, the used Renault Clio is super-chic, with low running costs and tremendous interior quality. Choose from four petrols and three diesels: the 1.5 dCi turbodiesel, with bhp of 68, 86 or 106, sometimes needs to be worked hard but does offer great economy at over 60mpg. The petrols, in 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6, perform well, while, for seat-of-the-pants thrills, try the 194bhp 2.0-litre Renaultsport hot hatch.
All trims come with alloys, remote central locking, traction control, a CD player and curtain airbags. The best option seems to be the Dynamique, offering the best mix of value and kit. Running costs are good: while the Renault Sport returns only 31mpg, all other trims will deliver over 40mpg and the 1.5-litre 84bhp diesel returns 64.2mpg. The 1.2 falls into insurance group 2, while the rest of the range is in groups 5 and 6, and the Renault Sport tops out at group 15.
