About Peugeot
The company celebrated its 200 anniversary in 2010 although it is fair to say that they began life in 1810 as a manufacturer of coffee mills, developing bicycles in 1830 and became famous for their brand. In 1882 following the developments in Europe, they moved into motor car manufacturing with a steam powered three wheeled car but, moved into the increasingly popular petrol powered car. The company diversified into motor cycles, which are still produced under the Peugeot name. Peugeot bicycles continued to be built until 2004, although the car company and bike company parted ways in 1926. Today the combined Peugeot Citroen partnership is the second largest car maker in Europe.
In the years between the two World Wars, Peugeot enjoyed varying degrees of success but the explosion in the growth of the motor car after 1946 saw them become a major manufacturer producing many models that have become a byword for reliability and longevity. The model 203 set new Peugeot sales records, remaining in production until 1960 and the 403 a million cars by the time production of the car ceased in 1962. The company expanded in the 1970’s period with the successful takeover of Citroen to form PSA. 1978 saw then buy out the European operations of the American giant Chrysler, with such famous British names from the Rootes group including; Hillman, Humber, Singer, Sunbeam, and Talbot.
Today the Peugeot company makes a popular range of cars and has had the distinction of having a number of “car of the year” accredited to them. Currently there are 18 model variants in the range all of which are based on the 107, 207, 308, 3008, 5008, 407, 4007, and 807 in the form of hatchback, saloon, drop head coupe, suv and people carrier.
The popularity of a number of the models means that there are a lot of quality used cars on the market with many of these pre owned vehicles being ex company or lease cars which have an excellent maintenance record. The 107 is a super class mini with low running costs, the 207 has been one of the success stories for Peugeot and buyers have a good choice of used vehicles available, which includes the popular drop head sports coupe. The 308 is a medium class saloon with a five star NCAP adult occupancy protection rating by the European New Car Assessment Programme out of a possible five stars. The 407 range is without doubt the Mondeo chaser and is to be found in saloon, estate, hatchback, and people carrier, SUV including 4 wheel drive versions, coupe and convertible.
The mission of Peugeot is to develop useful innovation focussed on protecting the environment, enhancing comfort and improving safety.
