Updated in 2007, the used Nissan X-Trail combines genuine 4x4 ability with great family appeal. The new shape is more refined, and has an improved interior and uprated engines. There are plenty of engines to choose from, starting with a 140bhp 2.0-litre petrol with 33mpg economy. For more oomph, try the 2.5-litre petrol, which tackles the 0-62mph sprint in 9.8 seconds. Both these engines were ditched in 2009, leaving just the excellent diesels, of which the more-powerful 173bhp 2.0-litre is the more popular, with a 0-62mph time of 10 seconds and 38mpg economy. There's now also a 150bhp automatic diesel.
Kit-wise, the entry-level Trek includes Bluetooth, alloys, climate control, six airbags, and stability control. With the Sport, you'll also enjoy bigger alloys, six CD changer, panoramic sunroof, cruise control, privacy glass and rain-sensitive wipers. The Aventura includes leather heated seats and electric door mirrors. From 2009, the range was trimmed to just the Acenta and Tekna. The X-Trail scored four Euro NCAP stars and comes with ABS, brakeforce distribution and seatbelt pre-tensioners.
