About Mitsubishi Colt
A great-value alternative to the usual hatchbacks is the used Mitsubishi Colt. In three or five doors, the Colt comes with roomy interior and nice choice of engines. It's nippy around town and decent on the open road. Only a smallish boot lets it down, and even that was improved in a 2008 facelift. The basic model comes with a 1.1-litre, 75bhp engine that's fine for pottering around the shops. For tougher duties, you'll want the 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre engines, the larger of which hits 62mph in around ten seconds, yet still returns 46mpg. The 1.5-litre DI-D diesel gives you around 60mpg.
The Colt has had more line-up changes than The Sugababes, with the original Classic, Equippe and Elegance replaced by the CZ1, CZ2 and CZ3 in 2006. There's good standard kit, including power steering, a CD player, remote central locking, ABS, EBD, electric windows and ISOFIX mountings. The range-topper gets leather, air-con, electric and heated door mirrors, and alloys. In Euro NCAP crash tests, the Colt received a good four-star rating.
