About Kia
Kia is South Korea’s oldest car company being founded in 1944 as a manufacturer of bicycle parts and steel tubing all hand made at the time. Motor cycle production was commenced in 1957 and it was not until 1974 that they moved into cars, although they had been making delivery trucks prior to this. In partnership in 1986 with Ford, they produced a number of cars that were based on popular Mazda models. Expansion continued during the early 1990’s but due to the Asian financial crisis Kia was declared bankrupt and, in 1998, South Korean rival Hyundai purchased 51% of the company, this has now been divested to 40%
