Ford is a giant amongst car makers and is a firm favourite across the world. Ford was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford who is attributed with the revolutionary method of mass production of cars which was unknown until then, as well as the often quoted remark of; "you can have any colour as long as it is black!" Ford has a number of famous American names under its banner including the Lincoln and Mercury brands; it also has a stake in Mazda in Japan and Aston Martin in the UK. Ford’s former UK subsidiaries Jaguar and Land Rover were sold to Tata Motors of India in March 2008. In 2010 Ford sold Volvo to Geely Automobile. Ford will discontinue the Mercury brand at the end of 2010.

Ford is the eighth-ranked overall American-based company, based on global revenues in 2009 of $118.3 billion. In 2008, Ford produced 5.532 million vehicles and employed about 213,000 employees at around 90 plants and facilities worldwide. In the UK Ford is the number one seller of vehicles, with a market share of 13.8% in 2010.
