Fiat has been named as the manufacturer with the lowest-weighted volume of carbon dioxide emissions in Europe, used car buyers have learned.

According to research from automotive research company JATO, Fiat cars finished just ahead of Toyota, Peugeot and Renault to secure the top position.

The figures were taken by collating the average emissions given off by cars sold in Europe over the course of last year.

Andrew Humberstone, managing director of Fiat for the UK and Ireland, said: "These are important figures as they show not just the environmental impact of one or two of our cars, but the whole range."

Used car buyers who are concerned about their budget as well as the environment may be interested in purchasing a Fiat Grande Punto.

The auto has been awarded 19 out of 20 by Top Gear magazine for its low running costs, while the classy design of the vehicle was also noted approvingly by the motoring publication.

It was added that the cheap price of a used Fiat Grande Punto is also combined with sturdy build quality, something Top Gear said is "nothing short of miraculous".
