Privacy and Cookies

Cookies and Carcraft

Cookies are small fragments of data we place on your computer so that we can give you the best website experience. In the sections below we explain in detail what cookies are, which ones we use, why we use them and how you can refuse to accept them if that is your wish.

What are cookies?

Cookies are tiny text files stored on your computer by the websites that you visit. At Carcraft we use them, for example, to remember which cars you've put in your favourites list and automatically complete the different forms in the site so you don't have to do this manually.

Our cookies will not harm your computer and we don't store any personally identifiable information.

Session and Persisent Cookies

Cookies can be set to remain on your computer for a fixed period (persistent cookie) or for the duration of your browsing session (session cookie). A session cookie is automatically deleted when you close the window in the browser you've been using to access the website, that is, end your browsing session. Remember it's not sufficient to close the browser tab - you must close the entire browser window.

A persistent cookie is one that expires (i.e. removes itself automatically) after a period that is pre-set in the website code. This period can be as short as a few minutes or as long as a couple of years. This allows a website to 'remember' that you have visited the site before and display the site according to some preferences you may have set on a previous visit.

First and Third Party Cookies

First party cookies are those which we at Carcraft set ourselves or are set by a third party directly through our site. These are used to make the browsing experience as good as possible for the visitor. We have direct control over what is set in the cookie and how long it is set for. We also use carefully selected third party partners to further assist us in optimising your website experience. The cookies from these partners are set from the partners' own websites and we have no control over these.

Controlling Cookies

There are various mechanisms which allow you to select whether you want to accept cookies at all and if so what sort of cookies and from whom. Within this site you can disable all cookies that the carcraft website might want to set (see link below in the site footer, bottom right - Change Cookie Settings), and for each of the cookies we describe in detail under each tab on this page, there will be further information on exactly which cookies we would like to set and how you can manage them.

Our cookies policy

To make full use of our personalised features on www.carcraft.co.uk, your computer, mobile phone or tablet will need to accept cookies as we can only provide you with certain personalised features of this website by using them. The website will be usable without cookies but many features will not work.

Our cookies don't store sensitive information such as your name or address, but simply hold the 'key' that is associated with this information. However, if you'd prefer to block all cookies, you can do this be simply going to HERE and following the instructions. This will only block cookies from Carcraft. If you want to know more about cookies in general and how to control them, go HERE.

These are the cookies we set:

Cookie Name
Cookie Purpose
Essential cookies set by carcraft.co.uk
ASP.Net_SessionId
This is a session cookie and an essential part of software code that operates the website. No part of the website can exist without it. It contains an encrypted string which refers to items stored in session state
carcraft-cookie
This is a persistent cookie that expires after one hour. The website is hosted on several servers and requests for pages are spread across those servers to ensure that site response is always fast. This cookie is part of the system that ensures that system works properly.
OptOut
This is a persistent cookie that expires after 90 days. It contains a single value, NO or YES, which indicates your preference of opting out of receiving site cookies or not. If this is set to YES no cookies other than this one, the ASP.Net_SessionId and carcraft-cookie cookies are set. Otherwise all cookies outlined on this page are set. You can remove this cookie using your browser settings, but your preference will also be lost if you remove this cookie.
Other cookies set by carcraft.co.uk
NewCustomer
This is a persistent cookie set when a person first arrives on any page in the site. It expires after one hour when the user has left the site or stopped using it. It allows us to keep track of that person's progress through the site, automatically fill in any forms after the user has completed the first one, and make sure we are fully aware of all of your requests and needs so that they can be answered fully.
PostCode
This is a persistent cookie set when a person first arrives on any page in the site. It expires after two months. It allows us to remember your location so that we can always show you the cars from the showroom nearest to you in any search and preset your postcode and nearest showroom for any forms you fill in.
Third party cookies set by carcraft.co.uk
_utma, _utmb, _utmc, _utmz
These are a mixture of persistent and session cookies with expiries of up to 12 hours. These totally anonymous cookies are set by Google Analytics and allow us to analyse how a visitor moves through the site, which pages are most often visited, which sites visitors come from and so on. This information helps to optimise the site to give you a better experience when you use the site as well as making our marketing campaigns more relevant.
_chartbeat2
This is a persistent cookie which expires after one month. It is set by Chartbeat and allows us to watch visitor activity across the site in real time as well as comparing activity on a day by day, etc basis. Like Google Analytics it helps us to optimise the site for a better user experience. These cookies are also read and set by Chartbeat themselves.
_vis_opt_s, _vis_opt_test_cookie2
These are persistent cookies which expire after four months. They are set by Vee24, the company that allows us to offer real-time on-line chat assistance if your nearest showroom offers this facility. These cookies are necessary for the proper functioning of the live-chat system.
Third party cookies set by third party companies
everest_session_v2, everest_g_v2
These are a mixture of persistent (_g_v2) and session cookies(_session_v2). The persistent cookie expires after two years. These are set by everesttech.net which is owned by Adobe. They anonymously gather information about how you've arrived at the site through various links on other sites, which page on Carcraft you arrived on and what you did once on the site. It allows us to more precisely focus our advertising and marketing efforts making it easier for you to find Carcraft and purchase your car.
JSESSIONID
This is a session cookie and is set by caranddriving.com, the company that allows us to offer video reviews of the cars on our site. This cookie is necessary for Car and Driving to deliver video content into the site.
Third party Ad-Tracker cookies set by third party companies
uid, tst, udc, udi, uic, evt
These are persistent cookies and expire anything up to 1 year after being set. These are set by Criteo.com. They anonymously gather information about your preferences - e.g. the make of car you've selected in a search - and then display ads which are relevant to those preferences on other sites.
bh, uid
These are persistent cookies and expire after two years. These are set by ad.yieldmanager.com which is run by Right Media and owned by Yahoo. Like those for Criteo they gather information about your preferences and deliver targetted ads on other sites.

Flash cookies (or Local Shared Objects)
On carcraft.co.uk we display video content using Adobe Flash Player. Adobe uses Flash cookies to help improve your experience as a user. Flash cookies are stored on your device in much the same way as usual cookies but they're managed differently by your browser.

If you wish to disable or delete a Flash cookie see Adobe Flashplayer Security Settings. Please be aware that that if you disable Flash cookies videos may not load or play back.

Social Networking - Facebook - and share tools

We have several points in the carcraft.co.uk website where you have the opportunity to share a product for sale or service with friends through social networks. At present we provide links to Facebook and Twitter. If you choose to create a share, such companies may send cookies and put them on your computer. We cannot control the setting of these cookies and they are a direct consequence of setting up shares.

If you do not want such cookies to be set, you should not share any of our products or services with sites such as Facebook. You can also check websites such as Facebook and Twitter for more information about their cookies and how to manage them.

Further information about cookies

If you'd like to learn more about cookies in general and how they are managed you can go to aboutcookies.org.

Third party cookies

When you visit carcraft.co.uk you may notice some cookies that aren't being set by Carcraft. These can come from two sources. We have partner companies such as Vee24 (which provides online chat) and CarAndDriving (which provides video reviews) but if you click on social networking links to register a like, for example, the social networking site will also set a cookie - and we have no control over that process.

These are the third party partners who may set cookies:

Partner Name
What their cookies are used for
Car and Driving
Car and Driving use both standard cookies and Flash cookies to deliver video reviews for each of the cars we have on sale. The standard cookie allows car and driving to remember your playback preferences and the Flash cookies are necessary for the actual video player to work - they remember the point you paused the video at, volume settings and so on.
Vee24
Vee 24 is a company we use to provide you with on-line chat help to our advisers. This chat system is only available from some and not all of our showrooms and is accessed when you press the Live Chat button which appears in the body of a search. These cookies are only set if you actually click on this button and request a live chat session. They are used to remember your chat preferences between sessions and to help manage the actual chat process. The cookies expire after four months.
Criteo
Criteo uses cookies to provide you with personalised adverts when you visit other selected websites. To learn more about these cookies see our guide to banner advertising on the next tab.

Personalised banner advertising on other websites

This type of advertising is designed to provide you with a selection of products baed on what you're viewing at carcraft.co.uk - your selection of a particular make, model and derivative of a car in a search, for example. Advertising based on these selections is then presented to you when you visit other participating websites.

Such ads may even suggest alternative choices to your original selection as well as products from other categories deemed relevant to your browsing history both on carcraft and other participating sites. The technology behind these adverts is based on cookies.

Your privacy

Please be assured that the data contained in the cookies used by these adverts is completely anonymous and doesn't contain any of your personal details. For more information on the privacy policy of Criteo please visit their website. For information on Right Media go here.

Disabling these adverts

You can opt out of this type of advertising for Criteo and Right Media by following the links above. If you want to know more about targetted advertising and be able to opt-out across the entire industry go here.

IMPORTANT... If you do wish to opt out of this form of advertising from Criteo or any other similar company you must have cookies enabled in your browser as, paradoxically, this opt-out choice is stored in a cookie. Similarly if you delete all of your cookie through your browser settings you will delete your opt-out choice and will need to go through the process of registering that choice again.

Managing cookies

It is recommended that cookies are fully enabled so that you can get the best out of this website. However if you do have any concerns you can use the options below to satisfy those concerns.

On your computer

You set your browser to handle cookies in a number of ways. These can be summarised as:

  • Refuse to accept any cookie
  • Accept only cookies from the site being visited
  • Accept all cookies including third party cookies

And you can chose either to automatically accept or manually accept each cookie (a window opens with the cookie details and buttons for accept and decline). Finally you can choose whether to clear all cookies when you close down the browser or not and you can quite separately clear all cookies currently set on your machine.

As each browser has different procedures for making these settings you should either click on the Help link in your browser or go to www.aboutcookies.org

On your mobile device

As the browser used on a mobile device will not be the same as that on a desktop or laptop computer you will have to consult your phone manual to see how to manage cookies. You may find that the level of control isn't as sophisticated as that on a desktop machine and your settings may be as simple as accept all cookies or don't accept any cookie. Managing cookies through a website - whether it's Carcraft's own site or third party sites - will be just as effective as managing those sites through a desk/lap top machine.

On this site

If you wish you can opt out of all cookies from this site by going HERE. Be aware that although most of the site will work well enough for you, certain features and other enhancements will not be available.

Cookie by Cookie

Some third party providers have a mechanism for opting out of the cookies they set. A list is given below. However, be aware that such a preference is, itself, stored in a cookie so you must still have cookies enabled in the browser if you want your opt-out request to be stored.
